Jesus, the radical ethicist, pushes humanity in a bold direction. No longer will the world be fueled by vengeance; it will now run on forgiveness. No longer will the world be animated by hate; it will now be enlivened by love. No longer will the world live fragmented and scattered. Now, reconciliation will bring peace. The ethical commands of Jesus prick our hearts in today's world. His ethical standards push us beyond the comforts of conscience and push us beyond our normal spheres of concern. This Sunday, Jesus challenges us with his simple yet demanding command: You shall love your enemy.
